The Corrupted Ones

A sci-fi setting focused on a future with sapient androids and the war they're involved with; fighting both against those infected by a cruel virus, and against those who wish to eradicate humanity of their own will.

Lore

As human technology advanced further and further, humanity finally created androids with completely free will. However, some of these androids grew dissatisfied with their role in society and the lack of protective rights they were granted. As they pushed back against humanity's demands, the resulting tensions soon grew from mere protests into a civil war over whether androids should be granted human-like rights.

It was during this war that an unknown person spread a virus. It was intended for older machines that had not been given sapience, to bring them to the androids' side and give them more leverage, however... The virus turned out to work on sapient androids as well. Unoptimized for their advanced minds, it caused severe side effects and malfunctions, ranging from bloodlust to death, and even those who did not like humans grew afraid for the direction the war was taken.

As such, while androids were given the rights they desired, the war did not end. Rather, the tides shifted; from humans against robots, to humanity against those carrying and spreading the virus.

Glossary

ANIMALOID - An android built to resemble an animal. This type of android often has skills or personality traits modeled after the animal it resembles, giving it abilities that are impossible for humanoid models.

HALF-SAPIENT - An android that can think for itself, but does not have completely free will. Half-sapient androids act like sapient ones, but are unable to even consider going against the rules they have been programmed with.

GUARDIAN - Originally referring to those androids that fought for humanity, it now refers to all those who fight on humanity's side of the war, whether human or machine. Guardians are considered separate from regular police, and essentially act as an anti-terrorism organization.

CORRUPTOR VIRUS - A virus that rewrites an android's mind to turn it against humanity. As it was not originally created for sapient androids, depending on the android's original personality, this process can cause damage to other systems such as memory, logic, or speech. While no full cure or immunity to the virus has been found, one of the counter-measures that have been created is a function that changes the android's eye color to bright red should it detect a virus presence. As a result of this counter-measure, androids are not allowed to have naturally bright red eyes.

CORRUPTED - Originally referring to an android that has been infected by the virus, this term nowadays encompasses all androids that see humanity as their enemies, as most see it as a distinction without a difference. Corrupted often group into factions, aiding each other in return for purpose and safety. Even if they're corrupted, androids with strong wills can resist or shut out the influence of the virus, although it is a conscious and constant effort.

CARRIER - A Corrupted android that is capable of spreading the virus to others via weapon, nanomachinery, or other methods.

STRAY - A Corrupted or criminal android that has yet to join a faction. These androids are either lone wolves or lost and confused, and are considered important to kill due to the increased danger they could pose if they join a faction.
